Lilypie 2nd Birthday Ticker

Typical home cook dinner for working Mom

May 13, 2008

On a daily basis, we typically have 3 types of dishes to go with our rice. The dishes consists of soup, meat and vege. Hubby is not a vege person, so mostly we have fruity types of vege or I will force everyone to eat the simple stir fry green leafy veges….hahaha!

Meats and veges are bought weekly at the wet market and hyper market, washed and stored in the fridge to be used throughout the week. The veges are mainly bought for Zoe’s porridge, so I just buy a few varieties more to have enough for another 2 adults.

The ingredients are prepared the night before - meats seasoned and veges are washed and cut up the night before. When we returned from work (about 7 ish), it just took us about 15-30 mins to cook all the prepared dishes.

I boiled the soup in a slow cooker the morning before I left for work. I have a timer to help time the brewing of the soup - set it to boiled till cook in the morning and re-heat again in the evening for an hour before we reach home. I also cooked rice by using the same method, with a timer. Set the timer to start 1.5 hour before we reach home and we will have fresh home cooked rice by the time we reach home. The house also smelled heavenly (rice and soup cooking) once we open the door at home each day…yummy…time for dinner!!!

Dishes1
Bitter gourd, tomato, big onion and pork ribs soup
Stir fry chicken with mushroom in oyster sauce
Grilled spare ribs with pineapple

Dishes2
Marinade the spare ribs the day before with chopped garlic, ginger, chilli and tau chu (preserved beans) in aluminium foil and grilled with canned pineapple (leftover from CNY..tsk! tsk! tsk!)

  2. Ann - When we started, I did everything and Mike will take care of Zoe…now, he help with the dish washing after dinner - which is good cause then I can spend some time with Zoe. He is beginning to tell me that maybe we could rest 1-2 days without cooking as he finds it quite tiring - its good to know that he understands that cooking at home requires lots of energy also…hee hee hee
